Medicare ID Numbers will be changing in 2018

Social Security and Medicare beneficiaries have been told NEVER to carry their Social Security card with them to protect themselves from identity theft. But then they are told to ALWAYS carry their Medicare ID card which has their social security number on it? Go figure.

To better protect Medicare beneficiaries, CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) has started an initiative to remove all Social Security numbers from Medicare ID cards and replace it with a Medicare Beneficiary ID (MBI). The new MBI will be randomly generated and contain no personally identifiable information.

New Medicare ID cards with the MBI will be issued to all Medicare beneficiaries beginning early 2018. The switch to a unique ID number will help to reduce Medicare fraud and protect beneficiaries from identity theft.
